What is Local SEO? A Plain-English Guide for Australian Small Businesses

Contents

If you’ve ever searched “plumber near me” or “best cafe in [suburb]” and clicked one of the first results - you’ve already seen Local SEO in action.

Local SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is the practice of making your business show up prominently in Google when nearby customers search for what you offer. It’s different from general SEO because it’s focused on geographic relevance - appearing in searches tied to a specific location.

Why Does Local SEO Matter for Australian Small Businesses?

Local SEO matters because 97% of consumers search online to find local businesses (BrightLocal, Local Consumer Review Survey). And the businesses that appear in Google’s map pack - those three listings with the pins that appear for local searches - capture the vast majority of clicks and calls.

If your business isn’t in that map pack, your competitors are getting customers that should be yours.

What Are the Three Pillars of Local SEO?

1. Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single most important asset for local search. It controls how your business appears in Google Maps and the local pack. You manage it at business.google.com. A fully optimised profile - with accurate information, high-quality photos, regular posts, and a strong review count - is the foundation of everything else.

2. Your Website

Your website needs to signal clearly to Google what you do and where you do it. This means having location-specific pages, using relevant keywords naturally, and ensuring your site loads fast and works well on mobile.

3. Reviews & Citations

Google uses reviews as a trust and relevance signal. More authentic 5-star reviews = higher local rankings. Citations (your business name, address, and phone number listed consistently across the web) also confirm your legitimacy to Google’s algorithm.

What Local SEO is NOT

  • It’s not about tricks or shortcuts that can get your site penalised
  • It’s not paying for ads (though ads and SEO can work together)
  • It’s not a one-time job - it’s an ongoing strategy that compounds over time

Does Local SEO Have a Compounding Advantage Over Google Ads?

Unlike Google Ads, where your visibility disappears the moment you stop paying, Local SEO builds an asset that keeps working for you. A business that’s invested in local search for 12 months is dramatically harder to displace than one that just started - and every new review, every new piece of content, and every new citation compounds that advantage.

How Do You Get Started with Local SEO?

The first step is understanding where you currently stand. A local SEO audit reveals:

  • How your GBP compares to competitors
  • Which keywords you’re ranking for (and which you’re missing)
  • The quality and consistency of your citations
  • Your review profile versus your top competitors
